School Clubs

Find out about all the extra-curricular clubs we run.

Introduction

Fair Oak Junior School has an exciting range of extra curricular clubs run by staff throughout the year. They range from a variety of different sports clubs, to music, art, ICT and hobbies clubs which children from years 3 to 6 can participate in.

Frequency and range of clubs

Most clubs are run for one hour after school from 3.30pm to 4.30pm on a weekly basis. For these clubs teachers require permission slips from parents for children to attend (see ‘Joining a club’ below). Other clubs are run at lunch time for which no permission slips are required. All clubs are run Tuesday to Friday – clubs do not run on Monday nights due to staff meetings.

Clubs normally begin in the second week of a term, and stop a week before the end of a term (e.g. in the penultimate week).

Two club timetable letters are issued to children in the school year, one in September to cover clubs running in the autumn and spring terms and another in April to cover summer term clubs. The range of clubs varies in autumn/spring and summer. Through the autumn and spring term, clubs such as cross country and football run, whilst in summer the focus moves to athletics and other sports. As part of summer sports this current year, children have had the opportunity to do Rounders, Cricket and Ultimate Frisbee. Other clubs, such as training band and main band, run throughout the year.

Joining a club

Children join most clubs by taking home a letter about the club and returning a permission slip signed by their parents to the organising teacher. Letters are given out by teachers when they organise a meeting about the club for children to attend either at the start of the autumn or summer terms. It is also possible to join a club during the school term if a child approaches the organising teacher for a letter.

When a child joins a club, it is seen as a regular weekly commitment and teachers encourage children to attend faithfully. If children are unable to attend for a specific reason, they should inform the organising teacher in advance either with a note from their parents or by the child telling the teacher in person.

If a club is cancelled

Sports clubs in particular are sometimes affected by bad weather. So if a club is cancelled, children are informed that afternoon and parents are free to collect their children any time after 3.30pm. Parents can find out if a club is cancelled by phoning the school office to check after 2.30pm . If a parent is not able to come and collect their child until 4.30pm, teachers will keep children in classrooms until they can be collected safely.
