September Sports News

Monday 11th September

Our boys football season kicked off today with a home Hampshire Cup tie against Fairisle. The two sides were evenly matched throughout the first half and this was reflected in the scoreline. Fair Oak took the lead only to be pegged back just before the interval. The match stayed a one one throughout normal time and therefore went to extra time. The visitors took the lead in the first half but Fair Oak ended extra time strongly and equalised to send the game to penalties. Unfortunately, after the penalties had all been taken Fairise were the winners by three spot kicks to two. Well done boys. Despite the loss our team can be proud of the performance that they put in today against a very strong Fairisle side.

Tuesday 12th September

Berrywood School hosted a qualifying football tournament for the Year Five County Finals which takes place later this month at Wide Lane. Only one school from the event would qualify for the finals. Fair Oak began the group stages with a comfortable two nil victory over Upham and then followed that up with a five nil thrashing of Hamble. A nil nil draw with Botley followed with a final two nil win over Droxford. These results meant that Fair Oak topped the group and would play Netley Abbey in the semi-final. At full time the score stood at nil nil and the sides could not be separated after extra time. In the ensuing penalty shoot-out Fair Oak held their nerve to win three two. In the final our boys faced Botley and just as in our group match encounter, the tie finished nil nil and this match also went to penalties. Unfortunately it was Botley who won this encounter one nil. Mr Stredwick was extremely pleased with the boys despite their final loss. The squad showed great sportsmanship and worked so hard throughout the competition. Well done boys!

Monday 18th September

The girls football season kicked off today with a Hampshire Cup fixture at home to Wimbourne. The away side battled hard throughout the first half but despite their best efforts, at half time the score stood at two nil to the Fair Oak. In the second period Fair Oak really put the pressure on Wimbourne and scored a further three goals to leave the final score at five nil. What a great result. Well done girls!

Tuesday 19th September

Berrywood again hosted a qualifying boys football tournament today but this time for the Year Six County Finals. Fair Oak began their group matches with a one nil win over Bishops Waltham and then beat St James by two goals to nil. A nil nil draw with Netley was to follow with a final one all draw with Shamblehurst to leave Fair Oak on eight points and in second place in the group behind Netley Abbey. The group winners went through to the semi-finals and the as well as the best second place team. After a nervous wait the totals were announced and unfortunately Fair Oak just missed out on that best second place by one point! Well done all of our participating boys who represented our school superbly throughout.

Thursday 21st September

Our girls football team played a friendly match today at home to Herne. Fair Oak put in a superb first half display and were three nil up at half time. The second half was much more even with both sides scoring once to leave the final result a convincing four one win to Fair Oak. Well done to the team for great performance.

Tuesday 26th September

Our girls football team rounded off the month with a tournament win in their qualifier for the County Finals next month. Fair Oak began the group stage with a three nil win over Stoke Park and followed that up with a one all draw against Swanmore despite dominating the game. Hamble were the opponents for the final group match and that fixture also ended in a victory for Fair Oak, this time by two goals to nil. These results meant that Fair Oak finished top of the pool and qualified for a semi-final against Freegrounds. Our girls safely negotiated this tricky encounter with a golden goal after extra time to win two one. Our final opponents were Shamblehurst. Fair Oak dominated but could not find a way past Shamblehurst’s resolute defence and inspired keeper and the match went to penalties. Fair Oak held their nerve to win two nil and book a place in the county finals! Well done girls.
