March Sports News

Tuesday 1st March

The Fair Oak hockey team were entered into a qualifying tournament for the Hampshire Games which is held later in the year. The competition was intense but our team got off to a great start in their first pool match with a two nil victory over St James. Our second match was against Botley who were also beaten, again by a score line of two goals to nil. This put Fair Oak in a strong position going into the last group game against Wellstead. Our team made it a clean sweep of victories with yet another two nil win. This meant that Fair Oak had qualified for the semi-final and were drawn against Berrywood. In a tense affair it was unfortunately Berrywood who finished one nil winners. What a great effort from all of our players!

Friday 4th March

A group of twelve pupils visited Banister Park Bowling Club for a bowls taster session today. The children were taught the basics such as how the scoring works, types of delivery, ditch rules and tactics. The Fair Oak pupils listened to instructions brilliantly and as a result, they all made great progress and had fun!

Monday 7th March

Our boys football team played an away friendly fixture against Botley and produced a solid display to win the game. The first half was evenly contested with neither side creating any clear cut chances. As a result the half time score was nil nil. In the second half Fair Oak put together some good passing moves and showed much more fluidity in their play which enabled them to take control of the match. In the end, Fair Oak ran out comfortable winners by a score of three goals to nil. Well done boys.

Thursday 10th March

The Fair Oak girls football team took on Hampshire Cup semi-finalists Kings Worthy in a home friendly match today. The first half was evenly contested with few chances created by either team. In the second half, Kings Worthy really stepped up their game and began to take control. Despite some solid defending from the Fair Oak girls they conceded twice. Despite the two nil loss, our team should be pleased with their battling performance.

Friday 11th March

Oakley Junior School travelled to Fair Oak to participate in a tag rugby training match to help our team to prepare for an important upcoming tournament. The session was really useful to our players who are developing nicely and should head into their upcoming competition with confidence.

Tuesday 15th March

Our annual Invitation Cross Country Relay Race took place here at Fair Oak Junior School. Eighteen schools participated in the event with over four hundred runners in total competing. Our school entered a team in three of the four races that took place and two teams in the other. Our lower school girls ran really well and finished in third place. Our lower school boys also finished in a very creditable third place while our upper school boys team went one better to finish second. Our upper school girls team finished in fourth spot. All of our fantastic runners did superbly considering the number of other competitors they were up against. Brilliant running by all of those pupils who participated!

Thursday 17th March

Our tag rugby team entered the Hamble, South Winchester and Eastleigh qualifying tournament for the Hampshire Games today. There were twenty one teams in total at the event and the standard of play was high. In the morning, all teams played their pool matches to decide which group they would go through to in the afternoon. Fair Oak began with a three one win against Shamblehurst and followed this up with a three nil win over St Swithun Wells. Next up were Berrywood A who provided a tough test but Fair Oak again proved victorious, this time four two. Our final morning match was against Fryern B. Fair Oak completed the group matches with another win by six tries to nil! These results meant that Fair Oak qualified as group winners and would play in the afternoon pool along with all the other morning group winners. Afternoon matches began with another win, this time against Fryern A by six tries to four. Next up were Otterbourne who were also beaten six three before we then won comfortably against Knightwood, seven one. Our final match of the competition was against a strong St Francis team but Fair Oak won again by a scoreline of six tries to four. What an amazing achievement from our team who have now qualified undefeated for the Hampshire Games on Thursday 30th June. Well done to all who took part!

Friday 18th March

There was heartbreak for our boys football team in the semi-final of the Hampshire Cup today as we were beaten one nil away to Balksbury. The team battled superbly in a match of very few chances on a very small pitch which restricted Fair Oak from ever really being able to get their passing game going. The first half was scoreless but unfortunately Fair Oak conceded with ten minutes left of play. Despite late pressure on the home side, an equaliser never came. Well done to all of our boys for their efforts and hopefully next year we can go on and win the competition!
