June Sports News

Tuesday 7th June

Fair Oak entered one team into both a lower school and upper school golf tournament today which was held at Wildern. Both the lower school and upper school competition winners would go forward to represent the area at the prestigious Hampshire Games Finals in Aldershot later in the month. All participating teams worked their way around a series of stations which were designed to improve every element of their game from putting to driving with points being scored depending on how well the teams performed at each activity. At the end of the tournament when the team totals had been added together our upper school pupils scored a superb six hundred and twelve points which put them in second place overall, just behind Stoke Park. Our lower school team also scored heavily amassing an impressive five hundred and fourteen points which was enough to win their competition. They have therefore now qualified for the Hampshire Finals! Well done to all of our golfers on a brilliant overall team performance!

Thursday 9th June

Two teams were entered into a girls football qualifying tournament for the Hampshire Games Finals. The competition, held at Berrywood school, was made up of fifteen teams split into three pools. Every team played every other team in their group with the top teams progressing through the semi finals. The winners of the semi finals would then both qualify for the Hampshire finals. Fair Oak B started with a nil nil draw against Netley Abbey but followed that up with a three nil loss to Berrywood A. They then played out two more nil nil draws with Freegrounds and Stoke Park which put them in fourth place in their group with three points. Fair Oak A beat Bishops Waltham one nil to open their campaign and then beat Wellstead by the same scoreline. This was followed up with a nil nil draw against Botley but our girls won their final match against Hamble by one goal to nil! This meant that our A team won their group with ten points and would play Freegrounds who qualified for the semi finals as the best runner up. In a hard fought semi final it was Fair Oak who came out on top with another score of one nil! Well done to both of our teams and congratulations to our A team who have qualified for the county finals!

Wednesday 15th June

Along with forty one other schools, our lower school tag rugby team entered the Overton tag rugby tournament today. It was the first time that Fair Oak have participated in this fabulous event and for eleven out of our squad of twelve, it was their first tag rugby game! Teams were put into pools with the top teams making it through to the quarter finals and the knock out stages. Fair Oak began with a four nil win over Waltham Wolves and followed that up with a hard fought two one win against an excellent Oakley side. South View were then beaten four one before our team then recorded three one wins against Overton and Bramley. In our last group game we faced Chalkridge and won again, this time by three tries to nil. Having won all of our fixtures, we then progressed through to the quarter finals to play Vernham Dean. Fair Oak ran out five four winners but despite the close scoreline, our team were always in control and were now really playing some great flowing rugby. Longparish were our semi final opponents and with yet another strong showing, Fair Oak won four two to set up a final with a very strong Fairfields side. Unfortunately for our team, our opponents proved just a little too good and deservedly won the final by five tries to one. Our team should be proud of themselves for such a brilliant performance throughout the day. Well done to all those who participated!

Tuesday 21st June

Today two teams were entered into a lower school cricket tournament involving other schools from the local area. The tournament was a league format with each team playing every other team. The team with the most points at the end of the competition would be crowned the winners! The Fair Oak teams began by playing eachother and it was Fair Oak A who came out on top by a margin of forty two runs. The second round of matches saw Fair Oak A play Berrywood and Fair Oak B play Durley. Fair Oak A performed superbly and ran out comfortable winners against a very competitive Berrywood side. Fair Oak B were equally successful against Durley and won by five runs. In the final round of matches, Fair Oak B narrowly lost out to Berrywood by just two runs. This meant that our A team had to beat Durley in order to win the competition and they duly delivered with a massive fifty five run victory! After all of the points had been totalled, Fair Oak B finished in third place. Well done to both teams for a great performance!

Wednesday 22nd June

Two teams were entered into a rounders tournament against Durley today held on our school field. Both of our teams got off to a great start. Our A team beat their Durley counterparts two one while Fair Oak B beat Durley B one nil. Fair Oak dominance continued in the next round of matches. Fair Oak B won three two against Durley A and Fair Oak A beat Durley B two nil. With two wins each, the final game between the Fair Oak teams would decide which of them would win the competition. Fair Oak A looked comfortable throughout the match and ran out four nil winners. Well done to both of our sides for finishing in the top two positions!

Friday 24th June

Our upper school tag rugby team travelled to Oakley in Basingstoke today for a series of friendly matches. First up for our team were Oakley Saxons and it was Fair Oak who won by a scoreline of thirteen tries to nine. Next, Fair Oak played Oakley Celts and were again victorious, this time by six tries to three. In the final game against Oakley Vikings, Fair Oak just lost out in a close encounter by nine tries to six. Well done to the team for a very good overall performance.

Tuesday 28th June

Fair Oak entered a team into a boys football tournament held today at Berrywood school between other schools from the local area. The competing teams were split into three groups. Fair Oak began with a match against the hosts Berrywood and swept them aside with a really impressive four nil win. They then followed that up with a hard fought but deserved one nil win against St James. Having won both of their group matches and finishing top of their pool, our boys qualified for the Cup Competition which would be between all of the group winners. A strong Stoke Park team were our first opponents and unfortunately they proved just too good and ended up winning by two goals to nil. Our second and final Cup Competition game was against Botley. Despite Fair Oak dominance and some breath taking saves from the Botley goal keeper, our boys just could not find a way through and the match ended goaless. A great performance from all of our boys who played really well to finish as tournament runners up!

Thursday 30th June

Fair Oak had previously qualified for the Hampshire School Games finals at Aldershot army barracks. This annual competition is similar in structure to the Olympics in that there are various teams competing in a variety of sports in arenas across the complex. The athletes involved are the best in Hampshire so the level of competition is fantastic. Our girls football team, our tag rugby team as well as our lower school golf team had all previously qualified for this finals day which is in itself an amazing achievement! Our girls footballers began the group stages of their tournament with two goaless draws and a narrow one nil defeat to an excellent Herne side. These results meant that they then went through to play in the Cup Competition. Our girls began with a two nil win against St Johns and followed up with another win, this time one nil against Berrywood. Unfortunately however, they then lost a close match by a goal to nil against Anton at the quarter final stage.

Our tag rugby team played brilliantly to win all of their morning group matches and finish top of their pool. This meant that they then qualified to play in the top group along with all of the other pool winners for a chance to win the tournament. After an encouraging opening four all draw with St Martins, Fair Oak narrowly lost their three remaining fixtures which put them in fourth place overall!

Our golfers played brilliantly throughout their competition and finished with huge points total which put them into second place. What an excellent achievement!

All of our athletes who took part deserve a huge pat on the back for the way they persevered in all of their fixtures against some superb opposition. They played with spirit, enthusiasm and passion while always remembering to play their games in the right spirit. We are all very proud of you. Well done!
