May Sports News - National Finals Report!

Tuesday 2nd May

Fair Oak entered a team into a year five and six golf tournament today which was held at Wildern. All participating teams worked their way around a series of stations which were designed to improve every element of their game from putting to driving with points being scored depending on how well the teams performed at each activity. At the end of the tournament when the team totals had been added together our pupils scored four hundred and thirty nine points which put them in fifth place overall. Well done to our golfers on a great overall team performance!

Friday 5th May

Fair Oak hosted a year three and four boys football friendly match today against Springhill. In a very even first half it was Fair Oak who took the lead just before the break with a tap in after the visiting keeper had initially made a good stop from a powerful Fair Oak shot. In the second half Springhill equalised from another rebound, this time off the post. However, it was Fair Oak who scored the final goal of the match with a well taken goal at the back post after an intelligent ball across the box. Well done to the boys for a good result against tough opposition.

Tuesday 9th May

Fair Oak entered a team into a year three and four golf tournament today which was held at Wildern. Just as for the year five and six tournament earlier in the month, all participating teams worked their way around a series of stations which were designed to improve every element of their game from putting to driving with points being scored depending on how well the teams performed at each activity. At the end of the tournament when the team totals had been added together our team finished in a respectable fifth position. Well done to our golfers on another great overall team performance!

Monday 15th May

Fair Oak entered three teams into a lower school tennis tournament held at Hamble Sports College. The standard of play was very high and all of our players should be proud of the way they performed. Our C team finished with 226 points which put them in third place. Our A team ended up in fourth place with 203 points and our B team finished in fifth place with 200 points. Well done to all those involved!

Tuesday 16th May

The cricket season got off to a great start with a boys tournament held in Botley between schools from the Hamble and Eastleigh area. The winners of the tournament would progress to the County Finals event later in the school year. Despite playing really well Fair Oak B just could not get a victory despite close matches with Upham, Botley and Berrywood. Fair Oak A however, beat Netley Abbey by ninety one runs and then Wellstead by seventy eight runs to qualify from their group and set up a semi final against St James. Fair Oak put in another superb performance in this fixture, winning by a comfortable seventy five runs. Botley were the opponents in the final and in a slightly closer game, it was Fair Oak who again came out on top to win by thirty two runs which means that our A team have made it through to the County Finals! Well done to both of our superb cricket teams!

Thursday 18th May

Along with forty one other schools, our lower school tag rugby team entered the Overton Sparkling Tag Rugby Tournament today. Teams were put into pools with the top teams and the two best group runners up making it through to the quarter finals and the knock out stages. Fair Oak began with a five nil win over Vikings and followed that up with a three nil win against Merton. Burnham Copse were then beaten four one before a hard fought one all draw with Great Binfields. Fair Oak got back to winning ways with a four one victory over Fairfields and finished off the group stages with an entertaining three all draw against Hurstbourne Tarrant. These results meant that Fair Oak won their group and therefore went through to the quarter finals to face Oakley. Fair Oak ran out four three winners and were now really playing some great flowing rugby. Sherborne St Johns were our semi-final opponents and with yet another strong showing, Fair Oak won five four to set up a final against Great Binfields who had finished as runners up in our pool! Fair Oak played the final superbly and always looked in control. The final score was four two to Fair Oak which made up for our loss in the final last year! Our team should be proud of themselves for such a brilliant performance throughout the day. Well done to all those who participated!

Saturday 20th May

Our boys football team played their English Schools Football Association National Finals tournament as The South West England’s representative school today. Fair Oak began their campaign against Kelvedon St Mary’s Primary Academy of Essex and despite taking the lead from our first attack, it was the team from Essex who ran out eventual winners by two goals to one. Our second game against Briercliffe Primary School from Lancashire proved much more successful. Fair Oak put in a dominant display to run out convincing three nil winners which meant that a win in the final group game against Swanland Primary School from Humberside would put our boys through. Fair Oak played calmly but effectively in this fixture despite the pressure and won deservedly by two goals to nil to set up a semi final against the other group winners, King’s Junior School from Cheshire who had won all three of their group matches. In this fixture, our boys played brilliantly and battled hard to earn a superb one nil victory with a goal from the penalty spot. In the final, our opponents were Victoria Preparatory School from the Channel Islands who had also qualified with us from the South West tournament. Unfortunately, the final proved just one step too far for Fair Oak who, despite being the equal of their opponents for much of the match, slipped to a three nil loss. Despite this final heartache our boys should not feel disappointed in themselves. Fair Oak have finished the season as National Runners Up – the second best school team in England! Well done boys, we are all so very proud of you!

Monday 22nd May

The boys cricket team played their first match in the Hampshire Cup for this year away to North Baddesley. The home side won the toss and elected to bowl first. Fair Oak batted superbly to end up with huge total of 335 for 6. Under pressure from the off, North Baddesley never really looked like they would reach their run target and indeed fell well short on 201 for 13. Well done to the team for a very good performance.

Tuesday 23rd May

Fair Oak entered three teams into a girls cricket tournament held at Hursley Park. Fair Oak C played four matches and despite playing some good cricket, they were unlucky to not come away with a victory. Fair Oak B lost three of their four fixtures and won one. Our A team faired rather better. They won all three of their pool matches. The first was a 49 run win against St Peters. That was followed up by a 30 run win against Otterbourne before a final 55 run victory over Weeke. These results put our A team through to the quarter finals where they would face Droxford. This match was extremely tight with both sides playing tight cricket but in the end it was Fair Oak who just edged it by one run! Colden Common were our semi-final opponents and it was they who won the toss and batted first. Common batted positively to finish with 244 for no loss. In response, Fair Oak could only reach 207 for 4 and so missed out on a place in the final. Well done to all of our girls who put in some great performances throughout the competition.

Thursday 25th May

Berrywood hosted a gymnastics competition today involving other local schools. The gymnasts all had to perform a floor routine and two vaults. The standard of gymnastics on display was superb. Fair Oak finished in third place overall with a combined score of 95.6. Berrywood, who were the overall winners were only just ahead with 104.1 points so our team can be proud of their performance. Well done girls!
