Friday 1^st May

Today our girls football team played a friendly fixture at home to Riders Junior School. Fair Oak quickly raced into a two goal lead and dominated for the rest of the first half. The pressure continued on the visitors goal in the second half but Fair Oak were unable to add to their goal tally and the score line stood at two goals to nil to Fair Oak when the final whistle blew. Well done girls for another good performance.

 

Tuesday 5^th May

Our boys football A team played their Hampshire Cup Final today against Lyndhurst of Portsmouth. The occasion was special for all of the boys involved but particularly for one of our team who became the first boy in our school’s history to reach one hundred sports caps for the school. The match began with both teams playing some good football but Fair Oak began to take control of the match and eventually took the lead with a well taken goal. This was the only goal of the first half which was controlled by Fair Oak. Lyndhurst came back strongly after the break and piled on the pressure which led to an equaliser with only minutes left to play! The match went to extra time with Fair Oak again on top and they were unlucky not to score with a brilliantly struck free kick which rebounded off the bar. So, at the end of extra time the score stood at one one which meant that the match would be decided by penalties. Unfortunately for our boys Lyndhurst were more clinical with their spot kicks and ended up winning the match and therefore the cup. However, each of our players should be proud of their efforts on the day and their great season. Well done boys – you did our school proud!

 

Wednesday 6^th May

A young and inexperienced Fair Oak girls football team was selected to play an away friendly against a Year 5 Kings Worthy team. Although our girls battled hard in the first half they found themselves four nil down at the break. However, a very good second half performance saw Fair Oak score two goals and only concede one which meant the final score was five two to Kings Worthy. Well done to our girls for a superb effort.

 

Monday 11^th May

Fair Oak Junior School hosted a gymnastics festival for Year 3 and 4 pupils from schools from the local area. The Fair Oak team had been rehearsing their routine with Dynamo Gymnastics who run our Year 3 gym club so our team were well prepared for competition! The standard of gymnastics on display was extremely high from all of the participating pupils, many of whom were winning their first competitive caps for our school. Well done to all of those fantastic gymnasts that took part!

 

Wednesday 20^th May

Our girls football team travelled to Herne Junior School in Petersfield to take part in a football tournament. The teams were split into two groups with the winners and runners up from each group going through to the semi finals once all group matches had been played. Fair Oak began their group matches with a fixture against Anton and despite some good play from both teams, it was Anton who won the game with a last minute goal. After that one nil loss, the Fair Oak girls re-grouped and played with both determination and skill in their next match to hold a strong Hook-with-Warsash side to a nil nil draw. Next up were the hosts, Herne who were beaten by our girls by a goal to nil. Fair Oak were now playing some good football and in our next game we beat Moorlands comfortably by two goals to nil. Our final match was against the group leaders, Solent A and despite some great passing and a superb work rate, our girls lost a close match by two goals to one which meant that Fair Oak finished third and just missed out on qualification for the semi finals. Well played to all of our players who showed a fantastic spirit throughout.

 

Thursday 21^st May

Fair Oak entered three boys football teams into a tournament at Wyvern school between other local schools. The teams were split into two groups with the winners of each group playing in a final and the runners up in each group playing a third/fourth place play-off game. Fair Oak A and Fair Oak B were placed in Group 1 while Fair Oak C found themselves placed into Group 2. Our A team got off to a solid start, drawing against Durley A but then going on a magnificent run, winning their remaining three group games against Upham A, Stoke Park A and Fair Oak B. Our B team beat Upham A in their first match, drew with Durley in their second game, then lost to our A team before rounding off their group fixtures with a draw against Stoke Park A. Unfortunately for the boys they just missed out on qualifying for the third/fourth place playoff on goal difference. Meanwhile over in Group 2, things were just as competitive! Fair Oak C began their campaign with a narrow defeat to Upham B but won both of their next two games against Durley B and Stoke Park B by comfortable score-lines. This meant that our C team finished as runners up in their group and thus qualified for the playoff match where they faced a strong Durley A team. However, in a one sided affair, Fair Oak C were victorious by three goals to nil! The final was also a rather one sided contest. Fair Oak were up against Group 2 winners Upham 2 and our boys produced a superb display to win the game six nil! Mr Stredwick was very pleased with the spirit in which the tournament was played – all of the boys should be proud of themselves. Well done!

I am delighted to at last be able to share with you the outcome of our recent OFSTED inspection (30th April and 1st May 2015). Fair Oak Junior School is officially a good school with outstanding features. This outcome confirms the hard work of everyone associated with the school and demonstrates that the team spirit of Fair Oak is alive and well!

 

In OFSTED’s words, …The school is well on the way to realising its vision of becoming an outstanding school.

 

Thank you for your support, both during our journey to good and over the two days of inspection when I know many of you spoke to the OFSTED inspectors. Thank you also to those who made time to complete the online parent view survey.

On Thursday (7th May) and Friday (8th May) the children from year 5 created wonderful willow sculptures as part of their Spitfires overhead topic. They had the opportunity to make different aircraft - including spitfires, V1 bombers, air blimps and even a Lancaster bomber. A wonderful time was had by all. It was wonderful to see the faces of the parents as they entered the music and drama room. The sculptures do look incredibly impressive!

 

A huge thank you to Charlie Lupton for giving the children this fantastic opportunity.

 

 

Today Years 3 and 6 had the opportunity to receive some excellent squash coaching from Paul Finch who lives locally and is a level three advanced coach. Paul is also a Hampshire County girls squad coach and a member of the Fair Oak squash club. Our pupils had a fantastic time and improved their racket skills considerably through numerous well organised and skills specific work stations. We look forward to working again with Paul in the future.

Today was the last day of our highly successful Bikeability course that has been taking place over the last two weeks. Bikeability is ‘cycling proficiency’ for the 21st century. Our Year 5 pupils were trained to level one and two standards. Level one helps new riders to control their bike before they move on to developing on-road skills at Level 2. Each level is designed to help improve cycling skills, no matter what the children know already. Our young trainees were taken on a journey from the basics of balance and control, all the way through to planning and making a journey by themselves on busier roads.

 

Well done to all of our Year 5 pupils who have worked so hard to improve their road safety skills. We very much look forward to offering this vital course to next year's Year 5 pupils.
